En Version[edit]

The english wikipedia version of this looks nicer. Additionaly, this template needs translations so people who don't speak english know what to do. -Aknorals 01:32, 14 August 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What do you think about this new icon? Its more similar to others and uniformity in most browsers in contrast to the current image. (Or maybe implement both images?) --Perhelion (talk) 15:30, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I kind of like the current one, but I'm no designer. Might want to ask in a wider forum. Dcoetzee (talk) 15:34, 25 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I really don't like using both images as below though... Dcoetzee (talk)
Ok, another idea: the forbidden pictogram with the current image?! --Perhelion (talk) 07:23, 26 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This image was (or all images in this article or category were) uploaded in the JPEG format even though it consists of non-photographic data.
The information it contains could be stored more efficiently or more accurately in the PNG format or SVG format.
If possible, please upload a PNG or SVG version of this image without compression artifacts, derived from a non-JPEG source (or with existing artifacts removed) and with transparency where appropriate. After doing so, please replace all instances of the JPEG version throughout Wikipedia, tag the JPEG version with {{Superseded|NewImage.ext}}, and remove this tag. If the template was used only on images as bad as the sample (File:Badjpeg.jpg), this might be a good idea, but many images in Category:Images with inappropriate JPEG compression aren't that bad and can easily live without all the overhead of changing them. In their context, the suggested addition of a "no-jpg" logo may easily be misunderstood.

As we had some major problems with this type of conversion in the past, I'm not really convinced that the suggested update doesn't bring that back. -- User:Docu at 09:28, 26 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Not done Agreed with Docu, the “JPEGs are forbidden” pictogram is not a good idea. If you can convince some other people (and an admin to make the change), then maybe. But until then, I’ve removed the editprotected request nobody wanted to fulfill. --Mormegil (talk) 13:11, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Differences in linguistic versions...[edit]

I think we may have a problem. The:

  • de
  • sp
  • fr
  • pt
  • pt-br
  • ru

verions are all adding non existant procedures that does not exist in the english version. That jpeg image should be replaced and listed to Deletion Request, which is a bit different from what the en documentation say. (Please note that the en documentation is not the en version.) Esby (talk) 13:36, 22 January 2011 (UTC) I think the english version changed but not their counterparts... Esby (talk) 13:40, 22 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Because: The "real" en version ("tag the JPEG version with {{obsolete|NewImage.ext}}, and remove this tag. For more information, see Wikipedia:Preparing images for upload.") says (nearly) the same as the other language here and the Commons police says here ("Once done, mark the old image with a {{superseded}} tag.") I mean that sentence should also stay here, with {{Superseded}} (what is redirected from obsolete) instead {{delete}}!? --Perhelion (talk) 18:56, 22 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The contents of Category:Files incorrectly marked as BadJPEG when I first did the edit (c 30 files AFAIR) gives some answer... as to whether it's worth the server cost of doing it on every BadJPEG - who can say? Rd232 (talk) 10:37, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

OK, well I goofed up on the above code (an extra } after -4). Anyway, I already got all the files, so if you want to undo it, feel free. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 12:17, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ok then the ratio was, ~3842 : 30, what is under 0,8%. Then theoretically we no longer need this!? -- πϵρήλιο 12:33, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK, removed. I guess this is something that could be re-added temporarily once in a while. At least we know the problems are not widespread. Rd232 (talk) 22:36, 16 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Redundancy[edit]

{{Edit request}} The appositive phrase "However," at the beginning of the second sentence of the template, should be removed or possibly replaced with something like "As such,". TortoiseWrath (talk) 01:51, 18 February 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The phrase is transcluded from an unprotected page, Template:BadJPEG/en. Could you edit it by yourself? Being a nonnative of English, I'm hesitant to do it. --whym (talk) 11:13, 24 February 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This template is 14 years out of date. GIF also does not have compression artifacts, and has been out of patent since 2003[edit]

{{Edit request}}

GIF does not have compression artifacts unless there are color gradients. Please add Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) to the template wording:

This information could be stored more efficiently or accurately in these formats: PNG or SVG or GIF (if limited colors without color gradients).

See: en:Lossless compression#Historical legal issues. See article quote below with emphasis added:

Historical legal issues. Many of these methods are implemented in open-source and proprietary tools, particularly LZW and its variants. Some algorithms are patented in the United States and other countries and their legal usage requires licensing by the patent holder. Because of patents on certain kinds of LZW compression, and in particular licensing practices by patent holder Unisys that many developers considered abusive, some open source proponents encouraged people to avoid using the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) for compressing still image files in favor of Portable Network Graphics (PNG), which combines the LZ77-based deflate algorithm with a selection of domain-specific prediction filters. However, the patents on LZW expired on June 20, 2003.

For charts and other non-photographic images GIF uses fewer kilobytes than PNG due to its limitation on the number of colors, and due to the simplicity of creating low-kilobyte GIF images versus low-kilobyte PNG images. Charts don't need a lot of colors. And in the real world people favor faster loading web pages versus more unnecessary colors in charts. PNG uses way too many kilobytes in many cases, especially if there are multiple PNG full-palette chart images on a page. Few people know how to create low-kilobyte PNG chart images with limited color palettes. It is built into GIF. --Timeshifter (talk) 05:13, 23 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Not done @Timeshifter: , GIF is very outdated, so it is also not recommendable. Please read COM:Filetypes #GIF -- User: Perhelion 19:30, 29 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
GIF is still better than PNG if the graphic has no transparency, and is 256 colors or less. Because it is much easier to use. COM:Filetypes #GIF does not say not to use GIF. So please change the template, or crappy jpeg images will remain on the site, and continue to be uploaded to the site, due to the difficulty of using PNG.
I started a discussion here:
Commons talk:File types#GIF is fine for images with 256 colors or less, and no transparency
--Timeshifter (talk) 18:19, 30 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Not done no consensus to do the change here or at Commons talk:File types#GIF is fine for images with 256 colors or less, and no transparency. --Jarekt (talk) 19:50, 9 January 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Suggest we don't remove template after new image upload[edit]

Currently the text of the template says

please upload a PNG or SVG version of this image [...] After doing so, please [...] remove this tag.

I think it would be good to have the warning about the inappropriate jpeg compression remain in place even if a new version is uploaded, to inform people of the proper use of image formats, seems there is a need. Perhaps we could add some parameter so it wouldn't ask for another upload if there is one replacement already or in case this proposition would cause issues with categorization. --Palosirkka (talk) 11:33, 30 January 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Support for cat=[edit]

{{edit request}} {{Convert to SVG}} wants to avoid Commons:OVERCAT and passes an argument to cat=, but nobody cared to implement the parameter here.

Replace [[Category:Images with inappropriate JPEG compression|{{PAGENAME}}]] with

Terribly named template[edit]

@Ixfd64: here you go.
  1. At a glance, the name would suggest that the JPEG is broken, but it means nothing of the sort.
  2. The name also suggests that the file is somehow a liability. A JPEG for this may not be ideal, but it beats the hell out of nothing, which is what we would typically otherwise have, since these usually come from third-party sources. - Jmabel ! talk 17:23, 24 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes it is a bad name. --Jarekt (talk) 19:05, 24 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
