I would like to propose an edit in the text

Link to add on unused files

Please use edit description

Please use edit description when editing this template. That makes it easier to find out what has been changed + find out what went wrong when something suddenly does not work. Perhaps some edits should be tested in a sandbox. At the moment the "Move unused files" does not work. --MGA73 (talk) 17:37, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Where does the template go?

I'm new to the administrative side of Commons, but have done a lot of work on WP. From that, I'm assuming that the rename request is to be placed on the talk (discussion) page. Is that correct? Remove .ext from advise

Hi, I suggest removing the .ext from the suggested name. So {{rename|new name|reason}} instead of {{rename|new name.ext|reason}}. The template automatically fills in the extension when it is not there and manually adding extensions to the template can easily lead to mistakes. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 15:51, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

While implementing my suggestion I noticed a negative side to the change, so I decided not to do it after all. If tou take away the .ext the red link provided to the user also does not have the .ext and is therefore always red, if the file.ext already exist or not. As I expected, likely impossible. You may revert to this version and test (e.g. add {{Commons:Sandbox|TestnameWithoutExtension}} to a file) but if either the old or new file names are >100 chars or contain unknown chars, it fails. -- RE rillke questions? 19:00, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Template:Rename/notarget

Template:Rename needs target has been replaced with Template:Rename/notarget, but this doesn't work well because {{translated tag|cleanup}} wouldn't work where there is slash "/" in the template name. --miya (talk) 00:42, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

When moving categories, the delinker (and category bot too I guess) removes the Move template, which saves a substantial amount of work and avoids categories in Category:Requested moves (all) that are already moved. The last couple of months, we never had problems with "misplaced" rename templates in categories. This is compliant with its documentation: for media only. It does not create extra work unless you blindly execute the move request without checking the reason and always keep the old category as a redirect. I assume neither is true. Additionaly if the template is rearly misplaced it obviously does create only a small amount of additional work to exchange the template. It has been enabled for a couple of months. In the end, we've got to manually remove around 100 to 150 instances in the destination categories (Siebot removes de {{Move}} on the fly), so there is no need to edit the destination categories (why I reverted it in May). The down side is that after about 3 months, we have one single misplaced one, so the conclusions are easy. File talk page warning?

Template appears to have a problem

Since there's an equal sign in your 'reason' (inside the link), you should have added 2= before it:

Point to talk page in template text

I think this template should warn potential renamers/movers to check the talk page to see if there's discussion about other possible names. I just ran across an instance of this template (on a File page) that I disagreed with (both the suggested new name and the justification for it), so I wanted to point people to the talk page to see my objections, but I found that I couldn't make any edit to the File page without the original suggestion being attributed to me instead of the original user. So I just had to remove his suggestion and replace it with my own (mentioning the prior suggestion and pointing to the talk page in the process). If the template had included a warning to check the talk page before renaming, I wouldn't have had to take such a drastic action. - dcljr (talk) 20:36, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Bug with parameter number 2

Few problems

Sometimes the rename suceeds but the code is unable to carry on the last two steps (removing the template, posting on commonsdelinker). This happens when the target rename is filtered, ie how .JPG becomes .jpg

The code then complains how it cannot move page onto itself like here: [2]

Also consider the case where a page is moved but the template wasn't removed. There should be a button to remove the template and check if entry was posted to commons delinker and post if it hasn't been. [3]

Also it would be useful if template offered check boxes for movers to click on for criteria that applies to the move. Currently the only justification that automatically shows is what the users provided. An even better option is for the template to take parameters for the requesters to choose.

I agree that it could be a good idea to have the file mover select one of the valid reasons to move a file. Often moves are done without a reason added. File movers and admins should know "the rules" but new users can't all be expected to know them so I do not think it should be a must for them to choose between reasons. That's why the input is a number which can be auto-translated to many languages. A number has no language. I agree that many people indeed did not notice the difference probably because the template currently does not declare non-numbered submissions as "incomplete". Username used by template

• Apparently, the template picks up the last editor of the page rather than the one who added the template. Comments?
• Another, unrelated issue: if the requester does not add the "Rationale number" (parameter #2), then the summary line gets cluttered with "You need to input a value between 1 and 7 which corresponds to the file renaming criteria", even if the request is well justified. 1. The new script for non-filemovers ("the move-tab") always included the real requestor. (|user=X) If it would be translated to more languages, I think it will be more often used -- especially by newcomers.

For the second point, I merely moved parameter 2 to parameter 3. I would wish to see parameter 2 be made mandatory as it is a good way to establish rationale to move the file directly correlating with existing guideline. I will do this now in the absence of objection to this end. With regards to the first point, it still shows up as though the last editor requested the move. Could the template be modified to subst: the name when placed? I never dealt with the {{Assessments}} - template and didn't know what it is doing. I should this have said before.

Maybe you are aware of a JavaScript wikitext-template parser à la

? Otherwise I think it's overdue to write such an “evaluator”. A common task is to alter templates and their parameter but recursive matches are impossible with RegEx(:?p)?. Are you seeing the green-area (where decline request and rename are) in the template? Perhaps deleting all files in your cache can help. If it doesn't, modify your common.css to force RL to create a new css for you.

The template looks a bit strange when inserted on a page.

• Two quotation marks appears after the reason.
• The text {{{instructions}}} (as plain text) can be seen in the bottom of the template.

Bug report

Idea: Tag files in separate categories

@Rillke: Hi! I have an idea. Instead of grouping all files which require renaming in one category – Category:Media requiring renaming, we could create a subcategories for every reason. This has sense for maintenance reasons. For example: Category:Media requiring renaming – Reason #1. @Perhelion and DH85868993: I will be more specific. Please look at the last example at Template:Rename/doc, the default use case for an empty {{rename}}. It invokes "{{autotranslate|base=rename/i18n|1=File:{{PAGENAME:{{{1}}}}}|2={{rename/Sub|note1=|note2=}}|5=File|7={{REVISIONUSER}}}}", which says on the 2nd and 3rd lines "You can help by suggesting a new name. To do this use the template like this: {{rename|new name.jpg|reason for new name}}". Please replace displayed text "reason for new name" with "numeric reason|text reason" by changing the line "helpUsReason=reason for new name" to "helpUsReason=numeric reason{{!}}text reason" in protected {{Rename/i18n/en}} to conform with the rename template's requirement for a numeric reason as parameter 2 and a text reason as parameter 3, as documented in Template:Rename/doc#Template parameters. I am asking here because of the existing section here and the wider audience here than at nonexistent Template talk:Rename/i18n/en. You could instead relax the requirement for a text reason from "required" to "optional" because I have seen no user of this template complying with it, and the template's code and supporting maintenance categories do not support it as being a requirement.   — Jeff G. ツ 11:39, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

Rename requests with invalid extensions

{{Edit request}} Is it possible the rename template cannot be used if the user requests it be moved to an invalid extension? When this happens, the template is not visible, however, it appears in the Category:Media requiring renaming. This is the case with a dozen files of Maralou Gray, which have been requested to be renamed with better names but with the extension ".ext" (apparently following the sample text in this template's documentation — See example here). I will move them manually to clear the queue (when I click on move & replace, it populates with the name requested, but with the proper extension), but is there a way this can be fixed in the future, so it is not possible to request an unknown/invalid extension that does not match the filetype? Feature request: previously declined moves

Is there a way filemovers, when responding to file move requests, could be alerted if another filemover had declined a previous request for the same file? I recently became a filemover and am still learning, but one thing I noticed is that it's common for people to repeatedly try to rename files after they have been declined. Sometimes the second request is a good one (for example, if the file rename did not meet the guidelines, and so they chose a better name) and it is OK to approve the second request, but the problem occurs when the file should not be renamed and it isn't obvious why. A lot of the file renames seem like sensible requests that meet the guidelines, for example, a file might seem to have a meaningless name, but it actually meets strict naming guideline for a particular set of files (such as icons, maps, etc.), not to mention the file names in various languages that are unfamiliar to the filemover.

There was a discussion about this at Commons talk:File renaming#Mperezreviriego and other filemovers liked this idea, and it was suggested to bring it to Village Pump Proposals. But it's not really a new feature so I'm not sure where to request it. @Perhelion: , would you know the best way to get this added? Thanks so much. Wikimandia (talk) 18:52, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

Yay thank you so much!! A problem is the "recently declined rename" gets updated frequently - it is already helpful since it shows up on the front page of the file under "File usage on Commons" but it drops off after a couple days. So if a file has ever been declined, it would be helpful if it was displayed, along with the reason why (if given). Thank you so much, especially for responding so fast.  Done but only as the file is shown on the mentioned log-page. Maybe Steinsplitter can expand the log time. That should be sufficient for the first !? A check of every file-history would be an huge API traffic increase, what would be not in relation. If renamers were diligent about writing why they declined to rename in their edit summaries, and subsequent renamers were diligent about reading file histories, more of these could be caught. I do both, but it seems I am in the minority. Failing that, we could put reasons in the file talk pages, and the template could display a warning if the file talk page exists.   — Jeff G. ツ 02:26, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

Multiple criteria

Would it be possible to change the script so multiple criteria can be selected? Maybe a checkbox instead of a drop down? Sometimes there are two or three problems wrong with a file name. (There's a typo in the current name, plus it's ambiguous, plus it needs to be in sync with etc). If you manually put in the script and put in multiple numbers, either like "1, 4" or "2 & 3" it just displays one of the criteria. I'm requesting this because I think there are some very strict filemovers who are actually declining requests because they think the new name doesn't match the criteria cited. Thanks!!

Majora, File:1 XPD7Jb624pg5GvF028k4dA.jpg was renamed and no longer shows the issue, and I could not find any issues with other files waiting for rename, so until another case is found, I can not diagnose the issue. --Jarekt (talk) 11:41, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

Unnamed parameter 3

The preposition is only used for this "sentence": (Quick adding) to User:CommonsDelinker/commands

.jpeg to .jpg

I can't use this template to request renaming from .jpeg to .jpg. It doesn't understand that the two are different. Recently a bug in the Commons Mobile App named my photo uploads as .jpeg instead of .jpg, and I'd like to fix that. Example: example. -PeterFisk (talk) 14:18, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

• The whole thing with extensions is wrong here. I hate when my files are named .jpg, it is outdated and should have been stopped a long time ago, but if I request to rename a file it refuses to keep the correct extension, and actually forcibly changes it to .jpg regardless of how many times I edit the template. safesubst

@Jeff G.: Unfortunately the examples mentioned at Commons:Village pump/Archive/2019/08#Moving files are no longer visible (because the files have already been renamed), but I don’t think adding safesubst would fix the issue. As far as I know, this code does nothing until it gets directly into the page text (i.e. {{rename}} is used as {{subst:rename}}), that is, until a such substitution {{safesubst:REVISIONUSER}} has exactly the same output under all circumstances as {{REVISIONUSER}}. Should check whether the target page is a redirect

@TadejM: Unfortunately translation variables are of no use for this case, both $nameB and $nameE contain wikitext fragments, which cannot be used for anything else than what was intended. You can use the template parameter {{{7|}}} directly. Weird thing with "tiff"

Seems one can't use this to propose the change from ".tif" to ".tiff".

I tried this on File:Swisstopo Dufourkarte BLATT III. LIESTAL SCHAFFHAUSEN LT TK 003 1849.tif which happens to the be only map of the series not using "tiff". Enhancing999 (talk) 10:10, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

Indeed, it uses Module:FilePage to preserve the extension – which make sense when people try to get a .png renamed to .svg, but also has the side effect that .tif remains .tif and .tiff remains .tiff, .jpeg remains .jpeg and .jpg remains .jpg, and so on. Probably there should be a list of equivalent extensions and it should honor the request to switch between these extensions, but I’m not sure how to do it best (e.g. whether this list can be queried from the MediaWiki software – the MediaWiki software certainly has to know which extensions correspond to the same MIME types, the question is whether it tells us them). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 07:23, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
