Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on 7 February 2014. Click here to learn more and vote »

|
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.
File:Quenya Paschal Greeting.png seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file. If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

Dear Draceane,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

Renaming[edit]
Hi, I had a look at File:"Přílet čápa" .jpg for which you requested a rename. When I checked the original title in Google Translate, it indicated that the title said, "Stork's arrival," and the requested rename translated as "Welcoming square" which didn't sound very distinctive (plus I wasn't sure if I saw a square in the image). As I do see a stork in the image, I thought that the current title was more distinctive and accurate, so I decided to keep it. But if there is another pressing reason that the file should be renamed, please let me know. Thanks so much! Mabalu (talk) 13:39, 2 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Mabalu: The reason is that the translation isn't accurate. Proposed name „Vítání_náves“: Vítání is the name of the village (it also means „welcoming“ in Czech) and náves means „village green“ in Czech. However, we can keep the „stork“ in the name, so the name would be „Vítání_náves_přílet_čápa“ or so. Best regards. — Draceane talkcontrib. 14:23, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

Welcome, Dear Filemover![edit]
Hi Draceane, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
- Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Original name[edit]
Please take care of such move summaries. This city’s original name is Theutonici de Epuryes (according to the enwiki article), as the official language was Latin in the 13th century. Its official name is Prešov since the signing of the Trianon Treaty in 1920. I don’t have any anger because of your summary, but some Hungarian users may have. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 11:18, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi: OK, I know a bit about that history. The meaning was „current name in country's official language“ (because I think that names of Commons files should be expectable) and edit summary might have be more precise. Regards — Draceane talkcontrib. 11:36, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
- OK. (I haven’t argued with the move itself—furthermore, I do think it’s better to have official names for coats of arms, and the half-English, half-Hungarian name looked terrible—, only the summary.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:45, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
Hi Draceane, is the above an account of yours? --Jotzet (talk) 11:20, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

File:Pque de las Avenidas 0339.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Category:Última Esperanza Sound[edit]
Hi:
Before you had more images in this category, there was and earlier category named Category:Seno Última Esperanza. So I have just redirect toward that category.
Pierre cb (talk) 18:05, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Pierre cb: OK, thanks. I didn't notice that, because that category hadn't been connected to matching articles on wikis. I've just repaired links on WD. Regards — Draceane talkcontrib. 18:09, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
"rename"[edit]
I saw that you declined my request to rename File:Merge-arrow updated.svg. How am i supposed to update the picture File:Merge-arrow.svg? No admin checks Commons:Requested updates to protected images. – GeMet [talk] 10:03, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
- @GeMet: Hi, I think that rewriting widely used image is a bad idea. The best option is either to wait for admin action, or post to file talkpage. Moreover, there should exist consensus on updating the file. (I haven't noticed any attempt to inform other users.) Regards — Draceane talkcontrib. 10:09, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
My file names[edit]
OK, I'll drop the (1), but how do you mean my file names are confusing? I thought names like (1)Tawny frogmouth-1 were clear enough. Sardaka (talk) 23:34, 8 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Sardaka: OK, thanks. I mean that you use capitalisation to distinguish different photos: File:(1)Tawny Frogmouth-1.jpg and File:(1)Tawny frogmouth-1.jpg (F and f). This is confusing. Do you see my point? — Draceane talkcontrib. 16:57, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
Imagevio for picture of my father[edit]
Hi, you initiated deletion of image https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Petr_%C5%A0ilar.jpg . I must admit that I don't know how to proceed with it. I checked documentation and hopefully I am doing the right thing now :). The problem is following: - I am Pavel Šilar, son of Petr Šilar (on photo). - Photo is taken by my brother (photographer). Then it was probably handled to my father's political party to use on their article.
So i guess rights belong either to my brother or my father. I don't know how to proceed further - provide evidence? Edit something? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Starojda (talk • contribs) 15:55, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Starojda: Zdravím, potvrzení o autorství v tomto případě musí poskytnout Váš bratr a to skrze systém COM:OTRS (cs:OTRS) – s ním by Vám mohli pomoci správci Mates, Podzemnik, Michal Lenc či Jan Kovář BK.
Nemám čas to zkoumat a ještě bráchovi popisovat co má udělat. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Starojda (talk • contribs) 19:21, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
Important message for file movers[edit]
A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]
Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

;) — Draceane talkcontrib. 11:45, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Draceane: Yup, to zní dobře. S pozdravem, --Podzemnik (talk) 18:13, 23 December 2020 (UTC)

Your most memorable shot 2020[edit]
Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
Over the course of the past two years, we've been sharing pictures that have a special meaning with each other at the start of the new year. Today, I'm inviting you add your most memorable shot of 2020 to this page:
I hope you, your familiy, and your friends are well during these difficult times. I wish you all the best for 2021 and I can't wait to see what your most memorable shot of 2020 looks like.

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne[edit]
Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.
Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.
If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:
Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:
I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.
All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 22:01, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
Reminder: Commons Photographers meeting tomorrow[edit]
Just a quick reminder: the meeting with large format-photographer Ben Horne will happen tomorrow, Saturday, March 20. If you haven't done yet, please consider signing up for the event and add your questions to this page. This will be our first virtual meeting in 2021 and I'd be super happy if you could join. All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 16:57, 19 March 2021 (UTC)
Road bridges in Czechia by district has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. Licence: Category:Screenshots from Mapy.cz[edit]
The following conversation is in Czech, as it concerns the Czech license, Czech maps and Czech photos on the commons
Pochopitelně nijak nezpochybňuji tebou navržené (a mnou uplodované fotky):
- File:Destova Usazovaci Nadrz Stodulky III Praha.jpg
- File:Destova Usazovaci Nadrz Jinonice Praha 5.jpg
- File:Albrechtův Vrch Ptaci Perspektiva.jpg
- File:Strasnicke Krematorium Mapy CZ.jpg
Je to k licenci {{Mapy.cz CC-BY-SA}} někde popsáno? Rád bych pochopil, zda se třeba mohou takto licencovat starší orthofotomapy z našeho mapového server. Díky za reakci. Mojmir Churavy (talk) 07:14, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

— Draceane talkcontrib. 20:24, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
Každopádně např. fotka Sazka Arény zůstane už navždy fotkou Sazka Arény, i kdyby se poté ten stadion dvacetkrát znovu přejmenoval, zboural a znovu postavil. Masové importy jsou trochu jiná záležitost - tam mi lezou krkem hlavně souřadnice zadávané s přesností plus mínus tisíc kilometrů, které nám zaplevelují mapy a matou kategorizační roboty. --ŠJů (talk) 15:24, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Villages vs. Municipalities[edit]
--ŠJů (talk) 20:10, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

You're invited to provide input…[edit]
Dear fellow member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
At our last meeting end of August, we talked about getting in touch with the Wikimedia Foundation and offering our help for improving Wikimedia Commons. Today, I invite you to provide your input on a draft open letter to the Foundation. Over the course of the next ten days, we'll further improve the text together, before inviting people to sign it. If you're interested in providing input, please engage in the discussion on the talk page of the draft.
In the meanwhile, I hope you're well and have a great time taking photos! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 08:42, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

Question from the CPUG Board[edit]
Dear user group member,
I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.
With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.
That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.
However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:
Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022
We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.
Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023[edit]
Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.
All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open![edit]
Read this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in Round 1 of the 2022 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
In this second and final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2022.
Round 2 will end at 18 May 2023, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you[edit]
Dear fellow Commons photographer,
I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.
At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.
All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
