Hi Materialscientist. Could you please flesh out your closure rationale a bit. I'm not a copyright expert, but my understanding is that even if the photograph was produced and printed in 1946, that doesn't mean it was published under the Canadian Copyright Law, which defines publication as "making copies of a work available to the public". § 2.2(1)(a)(i). Best, Voorts (talk) 15:23, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- We have no evidence of Crown copyright. The bottom part of {{PD-Canada}} says nothing about "making copies of a work available to the public". Even if it did, the fact of printing out the photo, which is evident from its source url (there are two versions of the same photograph), suggests that it was made available to some people. Materialscientist (talk) 21:12, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- The evidence of Crown copyright is from the source URL, which claims Crown copyright under "Ordering and viewing options" at the bottom of the page. As for the language "making copies of a work available to the public", {{PD-Canada}} says "it was subject to Crown copyright and was first published more than 50 years ago" (emphasis added). Under Canadian Copyright Law, publication is defined as "making copies of a work available to the public." I"m not sure that printing a photograph and sharing it with members of a committee in an internal investigation counts as being "available to the public". Voorts (talk) 21:23, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- Per Commons:Publication and multiple deletion debates, distribution of copies of a photograph qualified as publication on Commons. The number of people receiving the copies has never been an issue. Materialscientist (talk) 22:26, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- Got it. Thank you. Voorts (talk) 22:43, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Materialscientist. One more question: what would an appropriate US PD tag be? Thanks, Voorts (talk) 20:51, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Materialscientist, I just wanted to follow up on this. Best, Voorts (talk) 00:06, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

Sorry, I've missed your message, and fixed the templates after your reminder. As you correctly pointed out {{PD-Canada-Crown}} applies to this case. Hence we don't need a US PD tag (which was indeed required for PD-Canada). Materialscientist (talk) 03:47, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Franz Ritter von Des Loges statue in Suceava[edit]
Hi, User:Materialscientist. I'm familiar with the FoP rules in Romania that you gave as the deletion reason for Commons:Deletion requests/File:Franz Ritter von Des Loges statue in Suceava.jpg, but when was the statue in question created and when did the sculptor die? Since I can't see the picture anymore, was it the 1914 tomb, the 1931 funerary monument or the 2008 bas relief that was at issue? See https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_Des_Loges. Thanks.
All the best,
Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:20, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- The tomb and bas relief were either not fully visible, or they were hardly copyrightable. The main issue was the statue. It might be in PD in Romania (installed in 1931, I don't know the author), but not in the US, per COM:URAA. That aside, we had an author request, and the photo was taken against the bright sky, and thus the quality was relatively low. Materialscientist (talk) 22:00, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- Understood. Thanks for explaining. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:50, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
Hi Materialscientist, the deletion is wrong. This banner is intented to be placed there permanently for the whole of it's lifespan. I also have referred to another case concerning the same banner. Please undelete this image. -- Chaddy (talk) 01:45, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- "This banner is intented to be placed there permanently for the whole of it's lifespan." - does not look so. You'd need to provide reliable references for that non-trivial fact. Materialscientist (talk) 02:26, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- We had that already in the 2017 deletion request for my older but similar image (Commons:Deletion requests/File:Banner Liqui-Moly-Stadion.jpg). I provided the link also in the deletion request.
- This banner already hangs there since at least 2017 (or maybe even 2016) and it still hangs there (i can take another photo if you want). It is intended as a permant installation at the stadium fence. The only reason that it is a banner and not a more solid table or something is that such amateur football clubs have to save money and a banner of course is cheaper. -- Chaddy (talk) 12:52, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- We (admins at least) need to be consistent with our stance on such matters. Proving that "temporal" posters are "permanent" is difficult. While I do understand your arguments, I don't see such a proof. Materialscientist (talk) 21:55, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
I don't understand your question. I don't see any proof. Materialscientist (talk) 01:21, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, of course. :) That's why I asked you what proof I would need. What proof should I deliver? How can I proof that this banner is permanently installed? If you give me some suggestions I can try to gather this proof. -- -- Chaddy (talk) 11:59, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
- Can you please answer me? I really would try to solve the problem but I must know what you need. -- Chaddy (talk) 16:45, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry. I would like to help you, but I don't see a proof or a way to produce one. Materialscientist (talk) 21:00, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Okay - what if I would mail this soccer club and ask them if this banner is intented to hang there permanently? I could forward the conversation afterwards to the support team. -- Chaddy (talk) 00:39, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

Watermarks[edit]
Hi Materialscientist,
I was wondering how you remove the watermark. Is there a tool for it "on commons"? There would be several others of the same museum (but which I did not nominate for deletion as I didn't find a better duplicate). If I would be told how to do that, I'd remove the watermark myself. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 09:29, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- I use the GIMP Resynthesizer Plugin for brute force removal, like in this case, where the watermark is simple and doesn't cover essential details of the image. Otherwise, the technique is more complex and involves several steps like reverse engineering the watermark image and the watermarking method (e.g. addition, multiplication or something nastier like alpha blending), then reverse math using the watermarked image and the watermark image. Resynthesizer is quite easy to learn, provided you have experience with image processing. All that said, I can quickly remove the watermarks if you list the images. I don't do that systematically on Commons only because there are way too many watermarks to remove [1]. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 11:38, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for your offer. I tried to fix it myself, but was not so successful for now. I tried with the GIMP but for this I am clearly not experienced enough. Then I also tried it myself on my computer, but there I had an issue with the .gif format. The .gif seems to protect it against changes. So here are the ones with a watermark in the category Paintings of Renoir in the Musee d'Orsay I found. All with a .gif.
- File:Renoir - La liseuse verte, vers 1894.gif,
- File:Renoir - Etudes de nus, entre 1841 et 1919.gif,
- File:Renoir - Madame Gaston Bernheim de Villers, 1901.gif,
- File:Renoir - Nature morte, vers 1885.gif,
- File:Renoir - Nu, vers 1895.gif,
- File:Renoir - Portrait de Théodore de Banville, vers 1882.gif,
- File:REnoir Madame Joseph Le Coeur.gif,
- File:Renoir, Roses dans un vase.gif. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 13:09, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

I don't quite understand: You closed the DR as deleted "per nomination", but then kept the files? Something must have gone wrong here. Regards --Rosenzweig τ 06:33, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Deletion reason[edit]
Hi. Could you possibly give a better deletion reason for Commons:Deletion requests/File:MicrosoftTeams-image (195).png? Microsoft Teams is a real program. A course I taught for years requires the use of it. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:03, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- First, thanks for your comments in DRs, I do appreciate them. Second, no slight intended, but I don't see your point. I concur with the nominator that this particular image is out of scope. This has nothing to do with the topic being in scope. Materialscientist (talk) 08:39, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- The reason was "appears to be image for internal company use, almost certainly out of scope". Do you think it's an image for internal company use? That remark by the nominator suggested to me that they are ignorant about what Microsoft Teams is. But if you don't feel a need to address that part of the nomination, it admittedly won't change the world. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:47, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Ikan Kekek The image isn't about Teams proper, though; if it were a Teams logo or something, of course it would be in scope. It's a poster linking to guidelines for a specific company's use "for a productive meeting", however; which is not something I see a use for. —Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 18:49, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- I understand. I could imagine that maybe it might be relevant on Wikiversity or something, but in any case, I thought it was above COM:TOO US. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:30, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

I created this page in error while logged out: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Tom Harb.jpg. Could you please delete it and if declining speedy deletion, could you please revdel the edits with the IP address? There is also one such revision in the file's history, so if not speedy deleting the file as a clear copyright violation, could you please revdel that too? Thanks -- Alalch E.
